Use the texture-and-tone technique on a wood clock.

Let a wooden towel rack pick up the pattern in your towels.

Painter Jill Fitzhenry shows a new texture-and-tone technique that combines wood burning and acrylic painting to achieve a beautiful finish. Jill demonstrates the technique on a wooden tissue box.

    Materials:

basswood tissue box from Walnut Hollow®
design (the flower used here is from the book Texture and Tone, which unfortunately is no longer in print)
    tracing paper
wood-burning tool with universal tip and texture-and-tone tip
    extra-fine sandpaper
acrylic paint: off-white, light pink, dark pink, green
    tack cloth
    Walnut Hollow Flair Finish

    1. Sand the box smooth, and wipe with a tack cloth to remove dust. Trace the design on the front of the box (figure A).

    2. Using the universal tip on the wood-burning tool, burn around the outline of the design (figure B).

    3. Change to the texture-and-tone tip, which has small grooves that make several lines at one time (figure C). Place the tip on the wood near the center of the petal, letting it burn into the wood a bit before pulling slowly into the petal of the rose. Count to 3 before pulling the tip across the petal. Repeat for each of the petals (figure D).

    4. Apply off-white acrylic paint to the entire front of the tissue box, including the wood-burned areas. Be sure not to put too much paint in the textured lines.

    5. Wet a small brush, load it with light-pink paint, and paint over the flower petals. Let dry. Load the brush with light-pink paint, dip one corner of the brush in a darker pink paint, and blend the colors on the palette (figure E). Brush the two tones into the textured areas. Repeat with the leaf areas, using a light- and a dark-green paint.

    6. Add a stripe of pink at the top and a gold metallic stripe on top. Coat with Walnut Hollow Flair Finish to protect the wood (figure F).

    Tips:

    • Make sure the wood-burning tool is very hot. Let it heat for at least 5 minutes before using.

    • Don't use pressure with the wood-burning tool. Let the tool do the work, or you may go too deep.
