Materials (figure A): Wooden tray Glass chips Glass cutters Safety goggles/glasses Large flat essential brushes for glue application Foam brushes Disposable plates and bowls Powdered black solder Paper towels Rubber gloves Plastic spoon Baby wipes Marker Plastic bags Masking tape Old French brush Toothpicks Kitchen sponges Cotton swabs Plastic gloves Sandpaper Stained-glass inlay sealer Tack cloth - Even though the glass chips come cut and tumbled, for this particular mosaic serving tray it's necessary to cut them smaller. Use glass cutters to create the pieces you need for your design.
Work Smart: Always wear safety goggles or glasses when cutting glass. - Lightly sand wooden tray and wipe with tack cloth.
- Pour a small amount of glue into a disposable plate or bowl. Use a flat brush to apply glue to the back of the glass pieces and adhere them to surface. Use enough glue to firmly adhere the piece without having too much ooze out when pressed into place. The wood is very receptive to the glue and will set up in a very short period of time.
- Glue the cut pieces on the tray. You want a nice even coating, and be sure to leave approximately 1/16" to 1/8" of space (figure B) between the pieces. Arrange the pieces in any design you wish.
- Choose background pieces by size and color.
- Glue background pieces in place, beginning with the outer edge and working inward. Allow to dry for 24 hours.
- Mask off the inner sides of the tray to protect from the powdered solder.
- In a disposable bowl, mix black powdered solder with water to a consistency of peanut butter (approximately 3 parts solder to 1 part water). Mix small drops of water at a time to reach desired consistency. Mix only as much as you can use in approximately 20 minutes.
- Use the old French brush or a small stiff utility brush to spread the powdered solder over the entire project, paying special attention to every crack and crevice (figure C).
- Use a clean, damp -- not wet -- kitchen sponge to wipe away the excess solder from the surface (figure D). Be sure to wear gloves. Rinse the sponge frequently in a bucket of water, squeezing out as much water as possible each time.
- Allow project to sit for approximately 15 to 20 minutes. Use the buffer pad to clean away the powdery residue and reveal the finished design.
- Allow project to dry 24 hours before applying sealer.
- Brush sealer over entire surface. Wipe the glass pieces off with a dry paper towel or baby wipe. The most important area to seal is the solder. When the sealer is dry, buff with buffer pad.
- Wait 30 minutes before applying another coat of sealer.
- Allow project to dry 48 hours before placing it outside.
Tip: Sealer is also effective for indoor surfaces that will come into contact with moisture (e.g., coasters, trays). Products: See Resources for Plaid Enterprises Inc. and Walnut Hollow customer service information. All other materials may be purchased at arts and crafts stores nationwide.
