Before: The page has a cohesive color scheme, page theme and a few embellishments, but lacks the panache found in advanced page layouts and design.

After: Now the page has texture, dimension, interactive elements, and a creative use of paper and lettering.

A design element such as this allows your memories to become interactive.

The journaling is hidden between die-cuts that "fan out" with the help of brads -- an idea that can be incorporated into many different page themes and layouts.

Attention to detail is an aspect of scrapbook design that separates advanced pages from beginner and intermediate projects. A unique page design is as personal as a fingerprint, and can reveal a great deal about its creator. Here, magazine editor Melissa Inman reveals details that can elevate a page design to the advanced level.

    • Background paper and embellishments: Advanced projects often feature a combination of solid and patterned paper that has been embellished by the cropper to reflect the overall theme of the page. Pieces of textured, handmade paper are often added for pages with an exotic, rustic or outdoorsy look; while bits of vintage lace or paper with petals and leaves might be incorporated into a romantic design.

    • Titles: Instead of segregating a title to one portion of the page, spread it out over different page elements, borders or papers.

    • Mats and photo corners: Instead of simply matting or double-matting cardstock with plain cardstock mats, punched mats or frames, try something more interesting. Hand-tear the mat, or create a frame from an organic material. The material chosen depends on the theme of the page, but don't be afraid to mix it up. (On this "Japanese Gardens" page, organic material is used to highlight several photos, while the photo corners have been stamped with Asian characters.)

    • Interactive elements: Consider hiding a journaling card under a window, in an envelope pocket, or behind a textural element. The interactive element should require the viewer to open, untie, unroll or pull to reveal more about the page.

    • Embellishments and die-cuts with dimension: To create visual interest, many croppers choose to include an element that pops away from the page. Here, a footbridge -- secured by a slot in the page --spans the two pages of the spread and augments the page's garden theme.
