The softer edges created by paper tearing can be complementary to landscape, scenic or panoramic photos.

    • Use a template to trace a design onto a sheet of paper or cardstock (figure A).

    • Tear out design by hand (figure B).

    • Gerbrandt uses a two-tone paper to create a sun and a vellum for clouds. When working with vellum (which is more difficult to tear than ordinary paper), Gerbrandt recommends slower tearing to achieve a better result.

    • Layer contrasting colors to simulate a landscape with color gradation (like a mountain range).

    • Scoring can help create a freehand design.

    • A soft, feathered edge can be created by tearing mulberry paper (figure C). A paintbrush is used to brush a line of water onto the paper and create a line for tearing.
