The computer-designed background, border, title and scanned photograph (digital design) are combined with an interactive, sliding photograph (traditional technique) to create a scrapbooking page that captures the fun of the winter season.

    Figure E

Author Julie Stephani combines traditional scrapbooking techniques with digital design to create interactive page elements.

    Materials:

    Photographs
    Background paper
    Long paper strip
    Craft knife
    Glue

    1. First, use computer software to create a background, border, titles and, if desired, journaling.

    2. Next, select and adhere photographs.

    3. On this page, the family actually "sleds" down the hill (figure A). To create a similar interactive element, fold a long paper strip accordion-style. The strip should be folded so that the middle section (figure B) is twice the size of the two segments that border it on each end. The sections nearest the center folds down, while the end sections fold up (figure C).

    4. Next, use a craft knife to cut a narrow slot in the background page.

    5. Then flip background page over. Working from the back, insert the two end tabs into the slot (figure D). Make sure that the center section is flat against the opposite side of the page.

    6. Flip page over a second time. The tabs will extend through the slot on the front surface so that the photograph can be adhered to them. Extend tabs (figure E).

    7. Glue photograph to tabs.

To complete the spread, Stephani created a second page of complementary design and colors. A frame was placed behind the featured photograph, and journaling was placed in a special pocket.
