The newest software for scrapbookers borrows innovations once reserved for professionals. Designer Michelle Gallina demonstrates how easily special effects can be achieved with just the click of a button!

    • Using scrapbooking software, an entire page can be created onscreen, then printed. Alternately, the software can be used just for backgrounds, titles or graphic elements.

    • To create this background, Gallina uses the "fill" tool on her program. After selecting a pattern -- in this case "hearts" -- she simply selects "apply" and allows the program to work its magic. Gallina then reverses the color scheme to create a complementary background (figure A) used as a border and title background.

    • Looking for that perfect shade of "coral-red-pink"? Scrapbooking software will often let you mix and print custom colors.

    • To relieve hands that are tired from hand-lettering titles and journaling, special-effect fonts can be selected to achieve artistic lettering (figure B).

    • Breathe new life into clip art -- simply use clip art to add interest to the title and visually "describe" the action or theme of the page (figure C).
