Capture the fun of a special vacation day with this 3-D technique. Watch and learn!

Designer Jackie Ostrowski uses foam squares to elevate photos from the page and create a 3-D effect. By making several copies of a single photograph, Ostrowski can select a single element that stands out from the rest.

    Conner's First Catch

    Materials:

    9" x 11" x 3" shadow box
    foam squares
Sticky Dots (TM) adhesive by Thermoweb
    mounting tape
    mounting adhesive
    cream cardstock
    4" x 3" olive green vellum
dark green net material, small piece
    24" pieces of rope
    background photo, enlarged to 9" x 11"
2-3 copies of the same photo, approximately 4-1/2" x 5-1/2" Blue marker
    scissors or craft knife
    complementary embellishments

Create 9" x 11" background photo. Ostrowski alters her photo on the computer (to reflect colors of the sunset) and prints. To complement the background photo, several shades of sunset hues are hand-torn (figure A) and layered.

    1. Then, adhere mounting tape to back edges of the background photo. Place photo in shadow box and press firmly or burnish edges to adhere.

    2. Cut cardstock into 3 pieces: one 4" x 5-1/2" rectangle; one 2-1/2" x 4" rectangle, and 1 cloud shape approximately 1" x 4".

    3. Next, use the photographs to create a 3-D image. Begin with two identical photographs. From the first, cut out the entire image (in this example, the entire image of Conner holding the fish was cut away).

    4. Then, from the second photo, cut only the portion that includes only Conner's shoulder, arm and fish (figure B). Alter this step according to the photograph you've chosen.

    5. Layer foam squares (figure C) to elevate the photographs and increase dimensional effect. Use sticky dots adhesive to adhere first photograph to the 4-1/2" x 5-1/2" of cardstock. Then, layer second photograph to the first (figure D). In this project, the dots were used to adhere Conner's shoulder, while two 1/4" squares were stacked at the elbow. Three 1/4" and 1/2" squares were placed behind the fish.

    6. Use adhesive to secure layered photographs to background page.

    7. Adhere vellum to 2-1/2" x 4" cardstock and cut into oval shape. Affix the cloud-shaped cardstock to the oval for heading (in this case, "Conner's First Catch").

    8. Use mounting tape to adhere title on top of small box. Adhere the 4" x 5-1/2" cardstock (with 3-D photo) to other small box. Use mounting tape to adhere both boxes to the shadow/memory box as shown.

    9. Add rope, net materials and embellishments as desired.
