A pop-up like this can add charm to any scrapbook page.
Q: I'd like to learn how to make a pop-up page for a scrapbook. I'm putting it together for my children. Can you show me how to do it?

A: (Debbie Stapley, DIY crafts expert) It's simpler than it looks, and it adds great interest to a scrapbook. Here's how I made a pumpkin pop-up; you can create various seasonal designs using the same method.

    Materials:

    Acid-free paper
    Card stock (also acid-free)
    Scissors or paper-cutter
    Stylus
    Archival-quality glue

    1. Cut and fold in half a square of acid-free paper to fit on a page of your scrapbook (figure A).

    2. Cut a smaller piece of card stock to form the pop-up (figure B).

    3. Fold the smaller piece in half and sketch a design on it. The top of the design should straddle to fold; this will create a "hinge." At the bottom of the design, make a flange or tab; this part will be glued to the larger square. Cut out the design, leaving the hinge intact.

    4. Fold back the tab on either side of the design (they should form a stand for the design) (figure C).

    5. If you wish to add dimension, use a stylus to sketch in lines on the front and back of the piece.

    6. Use archival-quality glue to attach the photo to one inner side of the card-stock design. Be sure to apply glue all the way to the edge of the photo and to attach the photo with its base next to the tabs. (Optional: If you wish, before attaching the photo, glue down a contrasting border that will peek out around the edges of the picture.)

    7. For the pumpkin, Stapley added a green leafy cutout at the top (figure D). At this point you can add any extra details to the design.

    8. Fold both tabs outward; these will fit in the fold of the pop-up square.

    9. Apply glue to each tab and carefully set the tabbed edge into the fold of the card, folding it shut to capture the glued tabs (figure E). Let the glue dry.

    10. Glue the pop-up card onto the scrapbook page (figure F) -- if the card is facing you and you open it, you should see the photo -- and add any sort of embellishments you wish: more cutouts, rubber stamping, etc. On the front of the pop-up you can write a caption, if you wish.
