Craft expert Kathi Cardinalli shares a technique for creating primitive Mexican yarn-art designs. Materials: Wood board painted white for background Yarn in various colors Paper Tracing paper Marker Scissors White glue that dries clear - Draw simple shapes onto a piece of paper. Mexican designs most often used with this type of art include animal shapes, stars, the sun, the moon and spirals (figure A).
- Using tracing paper, transfer the drawn designs by tracing around the patterns to the white-painted wood background (figure B).
- Place a bead of white glue along the outline of one of the designs, and glue a piece of yarn to it. Do not cut the yarn.
- Place a bead of glue very close to the yarn outline, and glue the yarn to it, continuing in a spiral to fill in the design. If you come to a sharp corner, cut the yarn and start with a new piece, angling it (figure C).
- Fill in the background, using the same technique. Follow the shapes of the designs, and discover interesting lines and curves created by the spaces where they come together (figure D).
