    Materials:

Sennelier Design dyes or Silkcolor (nonsteam dyes) -- yellow, fuschia, turquoise or black
    3" foam brushes
    8mm China silk
    Stretcher bars
    Pushpins
    Dye dilutant
Thinned gutta serti (1 to 3 parts turpenoid)
Small bamboo brushes and 1" flat wash brush
    Optional: Blow dryer

    1. Stretch silk on stretcher bars using pushpins at 3" intervals.

    2. Dampen silk with a mixture of dye dilutant and water (1 tablespoon per liter).

    3. Gently layer a soft application of light background color (figure A), working from top to bottom. Let surface dry completely by air or blow dryer.

    4. Apply thinned gutta on surface using a foam brush just for this purpose. Let this dry completely before proceeding.

    5. Practice bamboo strokes on plain paper while thinned gutta is drying.

    6. Apply heavier or darker dye with wash brush using the double-loading method for the bamboo canes.

    7. Connect the joints of the bamboo with small black Z lines. Also in darker color paint in small delicate branches on opposite sides of the cane.

    8. Paint in the bamboo leaves with the small bamboo brush, using dark and light shades of color. Use a start-and-stop (figure B) technique to get the best results.

    9. Use a small pointed brush to create a design on the bamboo notches (figure C).

Note: In Chinese brush painting the key is to do the painting quickly. Don't procrastinate.

    10. Add thin branches using a Chinese bone stroke (figure D). It's important that the paintbrush have a pointy end.

    11. Use a larger and fuller paintbrush to create the leaves. Have fun and be creative!

    12. Let silk dry completely and steam-set, unless you are using Silkcolor (nonsteam dye).

    13. Dry-clean silk to remove thinned gutta.
