Q: I want to learn how to make a paper patchwork design to hang in my dad's study. Can you show me how it's done? A: (from Debbie Stapley, Ask DIY Crafts expert) Does your dad have any sort of collection, like cigar labels, that you could use for this project? If so, and if you don't want to use the actual items, make a color copy of them and use that. Or you can find images in a clip-art book and color-copy those. Here's how to do this project: Materials: Images Frame Luan or other thin board cut to fit inside frame Fine-grain sandpaper Decoupage medium (watered-down white household or craft glue works equally well) Orange shellac Brushes Metallic paint pen (optional) High-gloss varnish or sealer (optional) Metallic paint (optional) - Lightly sand the edges and surfaces of the wood, then apply a coat of orange shellac.
- Arrange the images on the wood as you wish them to appear. You may want to line them up, or you may prefer a patchwork design. If the latter is your choice, be sure to cut them so that they'll fit together at the edges to create a patchwork effect.
- Once you've arrived at your desired arrangement, fasten the images to the board with decoupage medium (figure A). Don't worry -- it dries transparent. When they're all applied, finish with another coat of medium. Let dry, and apply another coat or two of medium, allowing it to dry between applications
- If you wish, when the final coat is dry, you may outline each image with a metallic paint pen to create a border (figure B). (To use a paint pen, shake it thoroughly and pound it on your work surface to get the paint flowing.)
- After the paint is dry, top the board with a coat of orange shellac to give it an antique appearance (figure C). Let dry.
- If you wish, apply a coat of high-gloss varnish to give the board a shiny finish.
- Insert the board into the frame and, if you wish, dry-brush a little metallic paint along the surface of the frame (figure D).
Q: I decoupaged with an antique medium and did not like it. How do I remove everything to start over? A: I wish I had a good answer, but unfortunately, there's no way to do that. The best thing to do is to use color copies for your decoupage so that if this happens again, you can do the project over from the start. Q: I'm trying to organize a closet full of crafting supplies. Most of it is for scrapbooking. Got any ideas? A: My favorite idea is to buy some of those clear-plastic shoeboxes -- you can see through them, they stack easily and you can label them for ease in finding what you're looking for. Q: What kind of glue can I use to fasten beads onto eggs? I'm looking for something that will dry fast. A: Just about any type of super-tacky glue will work fine.
