Cindy Piccoli, host of HGTV's Decorating With Style, creates glass picture mats by layering glass pieces and adding paint or paper to the glass.

    Materials:

    Picture frame (no backing necessary)
4 to 5 pieces of glass cut to fit frame
    Acrylic paint
    Paintbrushes
    Ribbon
    Picture
    White glue
    Silver paint pen
    Words cut from magazines
    Heavy-duty tape
    Picture wire and hangers
    Thin plywood or heavy cardboard

    1. Paint one piece of glass on one side with a desired shade of acrylic paint. Cindy used royal blue.

    2. Apply white glue to each of the four corners of a picture, and glue it centered over the painted glass (figure A).

    3. Glue four pieces of ribbon on the glass around the picture (figure B).

    4. Place the second piece of glass over the top, and add silver stars around the picture with a silver paint pen. Add other designs with acrylic paint. Cindy painted a wavy red line above and below the picture. Let the paint dry (figure C).

    5. Place the third piece of glass over the top. Apply white glue to words cut from magazines, and glue them onto this layer of glass, positioned decoratively around the picture (figure D).

    6. Place the final layer of glass on top. Align the edges of all the glass panes, and place them in the chosen frame. Back the entire frame area with thin plywood or heavy cardboard, and tape around the edges with heavy-duty tape.

    7. Attach picture hangers and wire to the back of the frame, and you're ready to hang the picture.
