Crafter Marjorie Croner, author of Fabric Photos, has developed a technique for transferring keepsake photographs using iron-on mending fabric available at fabric stores. It's simple, requires no special chemicals and creates a permanent washable image. Materials: Photocopied keepsake photo Black-and-white copy of photo Iron-on mending fabric Satin fabric for the final image Card stock Iron Old bed sheet Wooden cutting board Scissors Optional: potholder or kitchen mitt 8 1/2" x 11" white paper - Make a "hot pad" by placing an old sheet over a wooden cutting board. Make sure that the sheet is smooth. Place an iron set on high on the sheet until the wood feels almost too hot to touch. You may need a potholder to protect your hands from the heat.
- Place the photocopy on the hot pad, picture side up. Place a piece of iron-on mending fabric, shiny side down, on top of the photocopy. Place a strip of card stock, large enough to grasp, 1/2" under the left edge of the mending fabric. Iron the mending fabric to the card-stock strip first (figure A). This will give you a handle so you can peel the mending fabric from the photo.
- Applying no pressure, lightly slide the iron back and forth across the mending fabric for approximately 10 seconds.
- With one hand, hold the photocopy down on the hot pad, and with the other hand, grasp the card-stock tab and gently pull it back, revealing a reverse image on the mending fabric (figure B).
- Place a piece of white paper on the hot pad. Place satin fabric right side up on the paper, and position the mending fabric, image side down, on top (figure C).
- Place a piece of white paper on top of the mending fabric. Iron, applying a lot of pressure, for about 20 seconds. Remove from the hot pad and allow to cool.
- Hold the satin in one hand. With the other hand, grasp the card-stock tab, and pull the mending fabric away from the satin. A permanent washable image will have been transferred to the satin (figure D).
- If you like, add color to the image with colored pencils (figure E).
Marjorie transferred an image of her grandparents to a wooden box. She also transferred a copy of her grandmother's graduation program to fabric (figure F).
