Talk-show legend Sally Jessy Raphael has always loved to paint, but when her family was young (and before her career took off), costly picture-framing was out of her reach. So she learned to make her own frames. Now she still enjoys setting off the paintings she creates in frames she makes herself. Here she and her contractor, Ed Cook, share their technique for making a simple wood frame. Materials: One 8' length of 1"x 4" One 8' length of 1"x 4, painted black" One 8' length of 1/4" quarter- round, painted black Several brads Paint Glue Sandpaper Screw eyes Nail set Hammer Hand saw Miter box Wood filler Putty - Take 1" off the 1"x 4", leaving a 1"x 3" piece.
- Miter the ends of the 1"x 3" with a hand-saw.
- Paint 1" piece that you sawed off black.
- Use the miter box and the saw to cut the 1"x 3" and the quarter- round to match the length of your canvas.
- Glue the frame pieces together and use the miter box as a clamp to hold the pieces in place.
- Tap in brads to reinforce the glue.
- Glue and brad the quarter- round along the inside of the frame to hold the painting in place.
- Attach the black 1"x 1" to the outside of the 1"x 3" with about 1/2" offset to add interest to the frame.
- Use wood filler to cover the nails so the whole frame looks like wood.
- Paint the frame gold and let dry.
- After the paint is dry, attach screw eyes to the back for hanging.
Now all you have to do is add the picture to the frame and you're all set! Expert tips: (Debbie Stapely, DIY Crafts expert) - When you paint your frame is really up to you. You can paint the pieces before, assemble them and then touch them up, or you can assemble your frame and paint it all at the end.
- If you use a miter box, you may not end up with a perfect miter each time. In that case, you'll want to use some wood putty to cover any cracks.
- It's important to set a nail before adding wood putty by using a nail set and a hammer; it will push the nail a little deeper into the wood, creating a space for the wood putty to settle into. Then you sand it smooth and touch it up with paint.
