    Family Altar

    Materials:

    Shadow box
Old picture frame (same size as shadow box)
Articles from family (wedding-dress lace, ticket stubs, photos, broken charm bracelet – or any jewelry with meaning for your family – silver spoons, fabric scraps – quilt material – yearbook, dried flowers, small seashells, ribbons, etc.)
    Small pieces of plastic foam
    Tacky glue
    Scissors
    Primer and paint

    1. Arrange the items in a shadow box, using the predominantly available fabric as the background (e.g., a big chunk of lace from your wedding dress).

    2. Using the plastic foam, cut small blocks to create the illusion of different levels for your photos, etc.

    3. Use ribbons, laces and dried flowers to frame photos.

    4. Once you're pleased with the arrangement, glue everything together.

    5. Assemble the shadow box.

    6. Lightly sand both the shadow box and your picture frame.

    7. Prime both the shadow box and the frame.

    8. Paint the frame and the shadow box the same color.

    9. Glue the old picture frame ON TOP of the shadow box and touch up with paint as needed.

    10. Decorate with more flowers or more photos for a real 3-D look.

    Tips:

    • You can make a color photocopy of any photos you may want to have reproduced for this project.

    • The key to the beauty of your shrine is in the items you've collected and the photos.

    • Rearrange until you're happy with it all!

Where do you get the products for this project?

    • Shadow box – framing or craft store
    • Old frame – garage sales and antiques stores
    • All that stuff you've collected over the years and left in a box someplace
    • Ribbons and dried flowers – craft stores
    • Glue – Elmer's
    • Primer and paint – hardware store (KILZ primer recommended, then latex paint).
