Guest Christine Angeli joins Carol Duvall to teach a fashionable technique that allows a pattern, stamp or graphic image to be inlaid in handmade paper during the papermaking process. Normally, if a stamp is applied to finished handmade paper, the ink will bleed, but Angeli's approach prevents this problem. She places the image or stamp directly on white tissue paper, then lays the paper on top of the paper pulp to generate a clean, crisp, permanent result. Materials: Paper napkins, tissue paper or other papers of your choice Scissors Any standard papermaking kit (figure A) Blender Various stamps of your choice Permanent fabric ink Colored pencils, watercolors or markers Note: To lay in a design, cut out images from paper napkins, tissue paper or other lightweight material, and set aside. Be sure all other noncolored layers of napkins are removed. OR To lay in rubber-stamped images: Using a permanent fabric ink (such as Fabrico), stamp or emboss image onto tissue paper. Allow to dry. The following steps are for both methods: - Cut or tear the paper into a blender, add water and mix for 5 to 10 seconds.
- Using the kit, form your handmade paper. Obtain more or less texture, as desired. Pour into the kit mold (figure B).
- After removing the paper from the mold, immediately lay the napkin image or the stamped image onto the wet paper. Smooth out, and dry as usual. The paper will soak up the tissue paper, leaving only the napkin picture or stamped image (figure C).
- After paper has dried, color in stamped image with colored pencils, watercolors or markers.
Note: Don't dry paper with an iron. This will cause the paper to separate from the napkin. If you have any edges that lift slightly after drying, simply glue down with clear-drying glue. Products: Most materials can be found in art and craft stores nationwide.
