Sophia Blankson prefers using fabrics from Africa to proudly reflect her heritage.
|
Sophia Blankson's designs combine Western style with African tradition. Blankson learned to sew in Ghana, where she spent summers at a relative's sewing school. Sewing is also part of Blankson's heritage: she comes from a family of tailors and dressmakers and learned to sew at 13. In Ghana, the method of sewing is much different than in the United States. There, a garment's design is conceived and the seamstress creates a pattern of the design before sewing the garment. In the United States, most hobbyists prefer to use a pattern of someone else's design.
