  • Technique #4: Blind Hem
  • From "Sew Much More"
    episode SMM-219F
    advertisement

    Sewing Equipment:

    Blind hem foot

    Sewing thread to match fabric

    Needle: #80

    Machine Settings:

    Pattern: Blind hem stitch

    Stitch length: 2.25

    Stitch width: 2.75

    Needle Position: Far right

If making Lapel Coat, cut out shaped hem facing, stitch sections together and press seams open. To reduce bulk, serge the top edge of hem facing.

Pin facing to right side of garment, stitch seam allowance and press open.

To reduce bulk, trim away muslin within seam allowance, grade remaining seam allowances and turn hem up. Secure with pins, placing them perpendicular to hemline.

With inside of garment facing upward, turn shaped hem facing back under garment until just the serged edge is exposed.

Test machine settings to ensure the stitch width is wide enough to just catch the fold on left side of needle when zigzag stitch is made. The straight stitches will be made along serged edge of the faced hem. Make any adjustments as needed.

The extended bar of the blind hem foot will ride along the folded edge of the hem to ensure the stitches will fall in the correct places. (This will prevent you from stitching the folded edge down or miss catching the folded edge and securing the hem. The small wire within the inner hole will keep the thread from pulling against the fabric and puckering.)
