Novelty Scarves A pair of new takes on the classic scarf From "Uncommon Threads" episode DUCT-255

Allison Whitlock and her Trendsetter guests, Barry Klein and Fayla Reiss, crochet two scarves that are anything but ordinary. They design a multicolor scarf by using a self-striping novelty yarn worked in single crochet, complete with decorative ruffled twirls at the end of the rows. They also create a multichain scarf that mixes single- and double-ply chains together to establish a fun look. Once the individual chains are combined, they're simply be knotted at each end, creating a completely distinctive scarf that anyone can make.

Fayla Reiss's Multichain Scarf

Fayla Reiss’s unique, trendy scarf takes shape as she crochets the simple chain stitches that form its foundation. She uses a variety of colorful textured yarns and continues the chains until they meet the desired length of her scarf.

Materials:

crochet hook, US size I
50 gr. each of any desired yarns (various colors and textures)
embellishments: ruffles, Mylar® boxes, metallic chips, ovals, etc.)

Crochet note: To chain (ch), yarn over and pull through; repeat until the desired length is reached.

1. Pick a desired strand of yarn, place it on the hook and form a slipknot.

2. Ch until the length reaches 72"-90" (or your preferred length) (figure A).

3. Cut the yarn and pull the tail through to secure.

4. Make additional chains as follows:

• Use some yarns alone to create single-ply chains and combine other yarns to create double-ply chains.
  

• Fayla Reiss shares a trick she uses when crocheting with fine mohair yarn: she blends in additional plies of component yarns to build up the thickness.

• As you create chains, add embellishments. Attach them to the chains at random spots by first placing the desired shape on the crochet hook and then wrapping the yarn over the mouth of the hook and pulling it through to lock them in place.

5. Make anywhere from15 to 28 chains in a variety of lengths.

6. Group them all together and tie an overhand knot at each end.
