1. The pattern is worked in the round (figure A). Each round begins with ch 1 and ends with sl st in first sc of round to join.- This method of working prevents a hole in the top of the hat. When you're working in a round, always increase evenly.
- Before beginning rnds10, 26 and 32, gently form the wire around the edge of the hat round, overlapping the ends about 1⁄2". Cut a length of wire. Hold the molding against the last completed round (figure B), leaving1⁄2" extending from where you'll begin, and work the first 5 stitches according to the pattern. Fold the excess wire back on the stitches you just made and continue with the round.
- When all stitches in the round have been made, fold the excess wire at the end of the round back onto the last stitches you made. On round 32, trim the excess wire back to 1⁄4" maximum before folding back on the stitches.
Rnd 1: Ch 2, 8 sc in second ch from hook, sl st to first sc in rnd to join.

Rnd 9: Ch 1, (5 sc, 2 sc in next st) 8 times, sl st (56 sts total).
Rnd 10: Ch 1, working in back loops while crocheting over length of wire 56 sc, sl st.
Rnds 11-25: Ch 1, 56 sc, sl st
Rnd 26: Rep rnd 11 while crocheting over length of wire.
Rnd 27: Ch 1, working in front loops (6 sc, 2 sc in next st) 8 times, sl st (64 sts total).
Rnd 28: Ch 1, (7 sc, 2 sc in next st) 8 times, sl st (72 sts total).
Rnd 29: Ch 1, 72 sc, sl st.
Rnd 30: Ch 1, (8 sc, 2 sc in next st) 8 times, sl st (80 sts total).
Rnd 31: Ch 1, 80 sc, sl st.
Rnd 32: Ch 1, (9 sc, 2 sc in next st) 8 times while crocheting over length of wire, sl st, fasten off (88 sts total).
