  • Cindy Dahnke's Silk Ribbon Embroidery Sachet
  • A vintage-looking embroidered linen sachet
    From "Uncommon Threads"
    episode DUCT-105

Cindy Dahnke uses silk ribbon embroidery to embellish a sachet. First she embroiders a small square of linen, using a straight stitch worked with embroidery floss. Then, with silk ribbon, she works several stitches including the French knot.

    1. Trace the pattern of your choice onto a linen square using a pencil.

    2. Thread the needle with 18" of 4mm silk ribbon in color A. Using the Japanese Ribbon stitch, work the silk ribbon around the outermost portion of the pattern. Do the same for the innermost portion.

Note: For Japanese ribbon stitch instructions, go to www.stitching.com/CDA/stitch/stitches/ribbon-stitch.html.

    3. Thread the needle with 18" of 7mm silk ribbon in color B. Also using the Japanese Ribbon stitch, work the stitches marked with an arrow shape traced from the original pattern.

    4. Thread the needle with 18" of 4mm silk ribbon in color C. Using the Japanese Ribbon stitch, work the areas that are open to the background fabric, trying to cover all the white portions.

    5. Thread a beading needle with beading thread and create berry clusters with 6mm and seed beads.

    6. Thread the needle with 18" of 4mm silk ribbon in color D and create the bow at the top of the wreath. Make three large loops on each side and fill in the center with short straight stitches.

    7. For the linen squares shown, hold the two linen squares together with the finished wreath on the top. Using 2 yards of 1/8" satin ribbon, weave the two squares together starting at the upper left corner and stopping at the upper right corner.

    8. Stuff the ornament with fiberfill or cotton balls.

    9. Finish weaving the 1/8" ribbon from each corner toward the center. With both ends in the center tie them together to form a loop for hanging.

Editor's note: Sarah Molini's shabby chic lampshade is featured on this episode of Uncommon Threads. We will provide the step-by-step instructions for this project as soon as they are made available to us by our guest expert.
