With today's new products, glass etching is much less intimidating than it used to be. Designer and artist Vivian Peritts uses etching materials from B & B Products to make a lovely gold-inlaid lamp. Ceramic Lamp With Vertically Etched Stripes Materials:
B & B EtchallB. etching cream Decorative-edged scissors Clear Con-TactB. adhesive-backed plastic Plastic squeegee tool that comes with etching cream Ceramic lamp Water Sponge Paper towels Gold wax Small paintbrush Solvent to clean brush - Cut strips of adhesive-backed plastic the length of the lamp base. If desired, use decorative-edged scissors to cut a design the length of one edge of each strip.
- Remove the paper backing, and attach the strips down the length of the lamp base approximately 1/2" apart or other desired width, placing the decorative edges adjacent to each other. You'll etch the area between the strips (figure A).
- Apply a generous amount of etching cream to one of the areas between the strips, using the plastic squeegee that comes with the cream. Wait 15 minutes, then rinse off the etching cream with water and a sponge. Repeat the process on all areas of the lamp base to be etched (figure B).
- Let the lamp dry thoroughly. With a small brush, apply gold wax to the etched areas. Wipe the gold wax with a paper towel to remove excess, and buff the gold ( figure C).
