    • Don't rely just on your memory when making decorating decisions. It's helpful to use paint samples and swatches (figure A) to help you match colors, fabrics and motifs. Consider creating a personalized swatch-book of samples to help you make decisions. Start by writing down the names of the room you're decorating, and jot down critical measurements, including window sizes.

    • Cut out paint chips for the paints used on your walls and molding.

    • If possible, get fabric and trim swatches from your furniture and drapes. Also include wallpaper samples.

    • Include photographs of the room to go along with the samples. You might also cut out pictures from catalogs or magazines showing the types of things you'd like to try.

    • Collect all of these samples and pictures on sheets, and store them in plastic paper-sleeves. Collect the sleeves in a three-ring binder (figure B), and use this book as a reference when you shop for new decorating items.
