  • Warm, Exotic Living Room: Closet/Entertainment Center, Coffee Table
  • A closet is transformed into an entertainment center and a tired coffee table receives a facelift.
    From "Fresh Coat"
    episode DFCT-208

Revamping this living room from a bachelor pad to a sophisticated, exotic room has begun: the walls and closet have been painted a rich shade of Terra Mauve. The painted surfaces look great; now it's time to continue the room transformation.

    2. When the paint is completely dry, clear acrylic low-luster varnish is applied to the shelves to protect the paint finish.

    3. Next, the coffee table is placed on sawhorses and sanded in a circular motion to remove the old finish.

    4. After carefully dusting off the old finish, black gesso is used to prime the table surface. Gesso will create a smooth undercoat and help paint adhere to the table surface. It is applied with foam brushes, which lay down a thin, even coat of product while leaving minimal brushstrokes.

    5. When the primer is dry, semigloss black Onyx paint is applied to the desk with the exception of the top center panel, which is left primed (figure C).

    6. When the paint is dry, the center panel is taped off and painted with a coat of Greenmount Silk paint (figure D).

    7. To bring out the texture of the panel surface, Shannon rolls on a coat of tinted high-gloss clear varnish tinted with Algonquin Trail paint.

    8. Next, dipping a stippling brush in Onyx Black paint and holding a finger still, Shannon pushes the brush against her finger, which lets tiny droplets of paint rain down over the white panel (figure E).

    9. While the paint is wet, varnish is lightly brushed over the paint. Brushed first in one direction, then lightly cross-brushed, the varnish helps move the paint drops in different directions (figure F) (figure G).
