French doors invite the clear New Mexico light into a bedroom filled with natural materials, colors and patterns. Stylized birds and flowers line the wrought-iron headboard, and hydrangea-patterned linens grace the bed.

New Mexico homeowner Ann Rollie's bright, airy bedroom blends beautifully with the land and sky outside her window. Using colors that meld with the outdoors -- mossy greens, golds and grays -- and incorporating natural materials and motifs gave this elegant garden bedroom a casual, inviting feeling.

An impressive wrought-iron bed with a soft patina finish features bird and leaf motifs (figure A). The headboard frame, upholstered in mossy green, contrasts nicely with the patterned bed linens. The duvet cover has a little leaf pattern, different from the gray and white leaves and hydrangeas on the pillow shams (figure B), but all the patterns and colors are subtle and easily mix and match.

Next to a small kiva fireplace is an inviting seating area that's cozy in winter and cool in summer with the French doors open (figure C). Twig furniture with cushions covered in the soft-green headboard fabric are natural in theme yet elegant.

White shutters on the windows and Duette shades on the French doors control light and provide privacy as needed. Whenever possible they're left wide open to let in the light.
