Chris Madden, host of HGTV's Interiors by Design, meets with designer David Millett, who let his sons help redecorate their new grown-up bedrooms. David took a cue from his 7-year-old son's interest in Native American culture in helping him decorate his new, more mature bedroom. The young boy graduated to a large double bed, which he chose to cover in a richly patterned fabric with a Native American motif. The same fabric, with its deep hues of rust, burgundy, green and blue, is also used for the window treatments. The youngster's color choice reflects his increasing maturity -- he's no longer choosing primary colors or pastels -- and the contemporary patterns are adult enough to grow with him. Collector items used throughout the room give it a more adult feeling as well. A drum from a Taos Indian reservation is used as a nightstand, and a pair of metal chairs with arrowhead backs provides seating space. Strips cut from wallpaper border used in the adjoining bathroom are arranged on the bedroom ceiling to give a tepee effect, which pulls the eye up and makes the room seem larger. David's older son preferred a very dark room with a recliner and a daybed instead of a full-size bed. Dark plaid walls provide a subtle backdrop for sports collectibles and posters, and a green recliner and dark-patterned daybed give the young teen and his buddies comfortable lounging space.
