  • Quick Tip: Pets and Accidents
  • From "Ask DIY"
    episode ADI-211
    advertisement

Cats are pretty good about relieving themselves only in the litter box, but sometimes accidents happen, say Ask DIY Pet Care experts Stephanie Zielinski and Joel Tatum. To prevent such slip-ups, keep the litter box really clean, sifting it twice a day and cleaning the whole thing twice a week. It's also a good idea to put a litter box on each floor of your home and to make sure each cat in your home has her own litter box. If your cat has an accident anyway, make sure to clean it up right away to get rid of the smell, or she will be tempted to relieve herself there again.

First, soak up the mess with a paper towel. Then use a bacteria-enzyme cleaner designed especially for pet odors and available at any pet-supply store.
