  • Pets Quick-Tip: Litter-Training a Kitten
  • From "Ask DIY"
    episode ADI-413
    advertisement

If you adopt a kitten, you may need some help enticing your new friend to "get the right idea" about using a litter box. Here are some tips that may help:

    • Before you even bring the kitten into the home, have the litter box already set up. Put the litter box in a quiet place away from where the cat is going to eat.

    • When you get home with your new friend, show the cat where the litter box is by gently placing him or her in it.

    • If you see the kitten squat to go to the bathroom someplace other than the litter box, immediately pick him up and place him in the litter box.

    • Make sure to clean the litter box frequently. Cats will happily use the carpet rather than go to a dirty litter box.

    • If your kitten has an accident, don't punish him. Punishment should not be associated with the litter box. Instead, clean up the mess with a paper towel, then put the cat and the soiled paper towel into the litter box. This should help get the cat thinking in the right direction.
