Designer Melissa Howes-Vitek explains how metal leaf shapes can be wired together to create an attractive craftsman-style lampshade.

    Materials:

    Metal lampshade frame
    Gold spray paint
Metal oak leaves in large and small sizes
    Wire cutters
    Small clamps
    Household glue suitable for metal
    Frosted or colored light bulb
    Acorns

    1. Apply a coat of gold spray paint to the metal lampshade frame (figure A).

    2. Wire large metal oak leaves to the vertical spokes and around the top and bottom edges of the metal lampshade frame (figure B).

    3. Use wire cutters to trim the end wires off smaller leaves, and glue them from leaf to leaf to form a cutwork pattern. Hold in place with small clamps until dry (figure C).

    4. Glue acorns to the shade to cover unfinished-looking areas of dried glue.

    5. Use a frosted light bulb or a colored bulb in green or amber to reduce glare and give the effect of an authentic arts and crafts lamp.
