Use PVC pipe to make a fat curtain rod at a very reasonable price. Home-improvement expert Chris DeJulio adds PVC elbows to each end of a length of pipe, covers it with fabric and hangs it from L brackets installed above the window. Draped with sheer fabric, this PVC-pipe curtain rod creates an elegant look for very little money. Install L brackets at the top of the window frame at drapery-rod height. Measure the distance between the brackets (figure A), and cut the PVC pipe to length with a hacksaw. Attach a PVC-pipe elbow joint to each end of the pipe (figure B). Stitch a fabric pocket to cover the rod from a piece of fabric cut twice the length of the rod and 1 1/2" larger than its circumference (figure C). Slip the fabric pocket on the drapery rod, and set the rod in place above the window, sliding each end of the pipe over the L brackets. Secure the piping to the brackets with screws set in pilot holes.
