    Cake boards: 30 minutes
    Chocolate designs: 2-1/2 minutes
    Buffet table: 3 hours
    Total time: 16 hours

    Invitations

    Materials:

    5" papier-mache boxes
    Craft paint
    Craft brushes
    Wire coils
    Wire cutters
    Origami paper
    Decorative gold writing pens
    Felt
    Tacky glue
    Ribbon
    Small plastic foam balls

    1. It's always a good idea before beginning party preparations to draw a design of what you want to do (figure A).

    2. The first step in making jack-in-the-box invitations is to trace harlequin patterns on the boxtops.

    3. Fill in the patterns with craft paint (figure B).

    4. Bend a thick gauge wire into a coil shape (figure C) and use hot glue to attach it to the inside bottom of the box.

    5. Decorate the foam balls with the felt -- make jester hats, etc. (figure D).

    6. Turn up the end of the coil. Apply some glue and place the Jack's head on top (figure E).

    7. Use a calligraphy pen to write the party information on colorful origami paper.

    8. Make a 1" slice in the center of the boxtop and use a hairpin to push the ribbon through. Tie the invitation tightly to the box.

    9. Wrap the entire box tightly with ribbon.
Expert tip: When freehand painting, it's handy to sketch out lightly with a pencil the design that you want to paint. Even professional artists use this technique. That way you know exactly where your design is going to be, and you don't run out of space at the end.
