Entertaining expert Deborah Fabricant used this garden tablescape for one of her recent dinner parties. It's a great way to bring the outdoors to the festivities.

    Materials:

    4 squares slate
    Hammer
    Large and small river rock
    Moss
    Votive candles
    3 small orchids or houseplants
    Clear plastic wrap
    Grass
Glass or Plexiglas (TM) serving trays
    Glue gun

    1. Use hammer to break slate into uneven pieces (figure A). Safety tip: Be careful handling sharp slate.

    2. Roll a length of plastic wrap down the center of the table to keep the surface clean and protect it from scratches.

    3. Place river rock and slate in interesting angles in a line down center of table.

    4. Place orchids and plants at intervals and fill gaps between with moss.

    5. Next, place votive candles in and around slate and rocks (figure B).

    6. Create "placemats" by gluing clusters of rocks to corners of Lucite (TM) or Plexiglas sheets (figure C) that have been measured and cut to correct size.

    7. Turn trays over so that rocks support them. Edge trays in moss, if desired.
