Need a place to showcase a treasured possession? DIY Woodworking host Bruce Johnson did, so he created a pair of handsome wall shelves based on a 19th-century Swedish antique. Johnson created his shelves from black walnut (with a clear oil finish) but says any wood can be selected to match surrounding woodwork or furnishings. Woodworkers who choose to undertake this beginner-level project can achieve the same results for about $30. The Swedish Wall Shelf pattern in Bruce Johnson's demonstration was featured in the February 2000 issue of American Woodworker magazine. Materials: 1/2" thick wood Planer (optional) Shelf pattern Masking tape Carbon paper Pencil Scroll saw - If necessary, plane wood to 1/2" thickness (figure A).
- Layer carbon paper and shelf pattern, securing to wood's surface with masking tape.
- Use pencil to carefully trace the pattern onto wood (figure B), then remove carbon paper and pattern.
- Before cutting along traced pattern, use relief cuts to alleviate blade stress and increase maneuverability. Simply use the scroll saw to cut v-shaped "notches" from the outside edge of the board into corner areas of the pattern (figure C).
- Once relief cuts have been made, use scroll saw to carefully cut all pieces along pattern outline (figure D).
- Repeat steps until all pieces have been traced and cut.
