Golden plans to update an old dresser for storage space in the family room by using a technique called decoupage (more information on decoupage can be found in the Resources section). She suggests using a plaid pattern in this instance because the plaid pattern is easy to match and continue the design.

    1. When cutting a piece of the wallpaper covering for drawer fronts, leave a little edge. Make sure the piece doesn't overlap the front edges of the drawer because it will be difficult to close, or the wallpaper covering may become unglued.

    2. Using prepasted wallpaper, roll the piece with the paste side out.

    3. Put the rolled piece into a water tray. To keep it weighted down, stick a dinner knife through the roll (figure A).

    4. Leave the wallpaper roll in the water for about 30 seconds. Submerging the wallpaper roll will help ensure the water activates all of the paste.

    5. Stick the wallpaper piece onto the drawer face.

    6. Use a sponge to smooth (figure B).

    7. Allow wallpaper piece to dry 4 hours.

    8. Using a sponge brush, spread decoupage medium all over the drawer front (figure C).

    9. Allow decoupage process to dry 6 hours.

    10. Adding different knobs to this dresser will give it an entirely different look. Golden chooses a teardrop pull (figure D), which will continue the flashes of elegance scattered about the room.

    11. Repeat steps 1-9 on sides of dresser. The final result (figure E) is an updated dresser that adds a splash of color to the room.

Another way Golden adds color to the room is through the window treatments. She sponged gold metallic paint onto a black drapery rod (figure F) to match the color of the mismatched rod ornaments, and added an elegant fabric panel to a burlap-type curtain.
