Mary Lyon, host of DIY Crafts, discusses woods and which kinds are suitable for which projects. Pine is inexpensive and light in color. It's good for small projects such as plaques and is easy to sand (figure A).
Walnut, a dark wood, has a deep, rich look. It may be used for small pieces of furniture and candlesticks (figure B).
Ash is a brittle wood with a medium color and is good for baseball bats and drumsticks (figure C).
Balsa is very soft and light in color. It's easy to carve and may be used for model airplanes because it is so lightweight (figure D).
Much of today's furniture is made of particle board, composed of compressed wood chips, covered with wood veneer. Particle board is environmentally friendly, as it's made of recycled material, and quite durable (figure E).
Plywood, another engineered wood product, is good for kitchen countertops, cabinets, roofing, etc.
