Materials for windsock: One 2-liter soda bottle
Craft knife
Scissors
Single hole punch
Acrylic paint or spray paint

Permanent markers (wide-tipped will go faster)

Flag tape or trash bags (13-gallon size)
String
- Remove the paper from around the bottle.
- Cut top and bottom off of a two-liter bottle to get a perfect cylinder (figure A).
- Lightly sand the outside of the bottle (this will make the paint stick to it). Punch two holes about an inch from edge in one end of the bottle. This is now the top; you will hang it from these holes.
- On the other end of the bottle punch 1" to 2" slits, leaving at least 1/4" between slits (figure B). Slits will run parallel to the edge of the bottle.
- Trim with scissors to remove any sharp points.
- Paint the outside of the cylinder with acrylic paint and let it dry (figure C).
- While the cylinder is drying, decorate both sides of your trash bag with markers.
- Cut the trash bag into strips, starting at the bottom (figure D). Now your strips will be doubly long! Strips should be about 1" to 1 1/2" wide to fit the slits in your bottle. If you want to, you can use flag tape instead of the trash-bag strips.
- When the paint is dry, spray with shellac to seal.
- Insert plastic strips into slits. Tie, staple or glue in place as you like. It will hang better if the strips can lie flat against the bottle.
- String top holes (figure E) and hang in a windy place.
Safety tips: - When using the craft knife and scissors, always have an adult present.
- When using spray shellac or paint, always spray outside.
