Not only is this project fun, it also enhances kids' knowledge of geography. Kurt Cyr demonstrates how crafts can combine elements from different cultures -- by creating a Mexican pinata from a Japanese paper lantern! Materials: Round Japanese lantern White and colored tissue paper Decoupage medium Scissors Lightweight candy and party favors String for hanging - Cut wavy pieces from darker tissue to create ocean. Use decoupage medium to apply to surface of Japanese lantern.
- Use different colors of tissue paper to cut shapes of continents. Decoupage to lantern's surface.
- Cut white tissue paper for polar icecaps. You should use several sheets for Antarctica, at the bottom of lantern, because they will have to hold the weight of the goodies placed inside. Decoupage tissue layers to lantern's surface.
- Add any other elements you would like -- such as ships or whales in the ocean.
- Fill lantern with goodies.
- Decoupage "Arctic Circle" on the north side (top) of lantern to enclose and finish the globe (figure A).
- Allow piece to dry thoroughly before adding string and hanging.
