Kids are sometimes afraid of the dark--and usually love things that glow. Craft expert Marty Brooks of Michaels Arts and Crafts presents some fun stars and decorations with beads that glow in the dark. Pony-Bead Names Materials: 5' length of 24-gauge wire Paper Marker Glow-in-the-dark pony beads - Measure a 5' length of 24-gauge wire. Fold the wire in half.
- Write a name on paper.
- Thread glow-in-the-dark pony beads on the wire, anchoring the first bead at the end of the wire by threading the wire around the bead and back through. Where the strokes of letters overlap (such as in the letter O), use only one wire at a time to thread on the beads, splitting the wires to form the whole letter. For letters that have a single stroke (such as in the letter Z), use both wires to thread the beads, and position the wire in a single line.
Smiley-Face Wire Hanging Materials: Unsharpened pencil 24-gauge wire Glow-in-the-dark pony beads Large wooden beads Glow-in-the-dark paint Glue Rubber bands - Draw a smiley-face design on a piece of paper.
- Cut 16 lengths of 24-gauge wire, and fold them in half. Thread a bead in the center of each wire.
- Place the wires around a pencil so that the beads line up along one side of the pencil. The folded wires will extend below the pencil on the opposite side. Twist the wires around the pencil to secure.
- Thread pony beads over both halves of each wire, choosing colors that correspond to the smiley-face drawing. We used orange beads for the background, white beads for the face and blue beads for the eyes and mouth (figure A).
- Wind rubber bands around each end of the pencil to hold the wires onto the pencil.
- Paint large wooden beads with glow-in-the-dark paint, and glue them to the ends of the pencil (figure B).
