One of the best photography tips is to zoom in on people, animals or plants to let the subject dominate the frame. © The Image Bank/Webshots.com

DIY Photography host Rick Sammon offers an expert's suggestions for taking great photos: - Use a flash for outdoor scenes. It fills in details and puts sparkle in your subject's eyes.
- Use the correct film speed. On sunny days use ISO 100 film; in low light, ISO 400.
- Compose the scene carefully. Imagine a ticktacktoe grid on your camera frame, and place your subject where the lines intersect.
- Beware the background. Distracting elements in the background can ruin an otherwise great shot. To eliminate them, reposition yourself or your subject, or blur the background by using a wide aperture.
- See eye to eye. If you're shooting children or animals, move to their level.
- Pay attention to the direction and quality of light, and let it help you alter the mood of a scene.
- Hold the camera steady and release the shutter carefully.
- Try to tell the whole story.
