Bags come in a variety of sizes and configurations, so before you buy, decide how many cameras, lenses and accessories you want to carry at any one time. You may want to have more than one camera bag for greater flexibility in a variety of situations, says photographer and DIY Photography host Rick Sammon.

A fanny pack (figure A), worn in front rather than at your back, gives you quick and easy access to your camera. Fanny packs come in handy when you're hiking or want to keep your arms free.

A compact over-the-shoulder camera case (figure B) allows room for one camera and maybe an extra lens, plus extra film and batteries. A large over-the-shoulder bag will hold plenty of equipment, including telephoto lenses.

Backpacks (figure C), worn over the shoulders and strapped around the waist, give you lots of stability, plus room to carry gear.

Some packs have a built-in raincoat (figure D) that keeps your camera and lenses dry in all kinds of weather.
