One of DIY's most frequently asked questions is, Can I paint my countertops? Brad Staggs, DIY's Home Improvement expert, answers with a resounding yes! His only caveat: Find product that will work on countertop material, such as the Insul-X brand, which he uses in this demonstration.

Here are Staggs' Simple Steps for a countertop makeover:

    1. Clean the entire surface thoroughly with something like TSP. It isn't necessary to sand -- the primer will stick to the surface as long as it's clean.

    2. Apply primer.

Tip: Be sure to have the primer tinted to the final color; doing so will require you to use less of the final color.

    3. Once the primer is dry, mix up the two-part epoxy by pouring part B into part A, following manufacturer's instructions. Mix thoroughly.

Tip: You have to use the mixture within four hours of mixing, so be sure you're ready to take on the project before you start this step.

    4. Using either a synthetic brush or a foam roller, apply the epoxy.

Tip: A foam roller produces the smoothest finish).

    5. The top coat will be dry in about an hour; then you can add a second coat if necessary. It will be fully cured within seven days.

Remember: After the countertops have been painted and allowed to cure, always be careful with hot pots and pans -- use trivets to protect the surface.
