In this episode of Major League Remodel workshop, host and long-time sportscaster Denny Janson puts his money where his mouth is. In other episodes, Denny has undertaken remodeling projects in the homes of several Major League ball players. In this one, he takes on several projects in his own home. It doesn't hurt that Denny, in addition to being a career sports-enthusiast, is also an accomplished do-it-yourselfer and self-described tool-nut. Projects included in this episode: installation and deck extension and authentic stadium seats to be used as outdoor furniture; a rotating display case for baseball collectibles and memorabilia and some creative ideas for framing and wall displays. In this segment, the outdoor project gets underway with installation of a backyard deck-extension that will serve as the platform for installing the authentic stadium seats.
Stadium-Seat Deck Materials: Pressure-treated lumber Post-hole digger Cordless drill; screwdriver attachment Various drill-bits (including paddle bits and masonry bits) Jig saw Tape measure Carpenter's level Hammer Nails Concrete-anchor bolts Joist-hangers Galvanized wood screws Quick-set concrete Orange spray-paint Safety Alert: Always wear eye protection, and follow proper safety precautions, when working with power tools.
Steps:
- The existing deck off the back of Denny's house is brick. The addition that will accommodate the new seating will be wood. In our demonstration, the lumber for the deck (support posts, joists and decking boards) had been pre-cut to the appropriate lengths.
- Once you've decided on the dimensions, measure and mark the space where the deck will be added (figure A). Use brightly-colored spray-paint to mark the locations for post-holes, etc.
- Since the addition shown in our project was fairly small, only five support posts were required. Use a post-hole digger to begin digging the holes for installing your support posts (figure B). The holes should be about 12 inches deep.
- Once the post-holes are dug, begin drilling the first 2x6 board with a 1" paddle bit. This will act as a counter-sink bit for the nut and washer. Finish off the hole with a 5/8" paddle bit. Place holes, centered on the board, about every 16 inches along its length (figure C).
- Next, attach the 2x6 ledger board to the side of the side of the brick. Hold the board in place, and use a masonry bit to mark for holes (figure D).
- Once the locations have been marked, begin drilling the holes in the brick with a 1/2" masonry bit.
- Position the 2x6 and attach it to the brick using concrete-anchor bolts (figure E). The anchors will need to be hammered in for a tight fit.
- With the first 2x6 attached, install the second 2x6 support brace, making sure that the board is level (figure F).
- Pour dry quick-setting concrete mix in the first empty hole and position a 4x4 post in the hole. This creates a brace for attaching the third support -- a 2x8 board. The second and third supports can now be nailed to the post (figure G).
- Install the second post, position the third support and level it. Fasten the third and fourth support braces to the post with wood screws (figure H). This structure now serves as a frame for the floor joists.
- Install the floor joists to the support braces using metal joist-hangers (figure I).
- Install the last two posts and fasten the supports to them with wood screws. Secure the posts in the ground with quick-setting concrete. Following the directions on the concrete mix, pour the mix into the holes (figure J), add water and tamp down the mixture. It's typically best to do this a little at a time, continuing to add more concrete mixture and tamping until the hole is fairly level with the ground surrounding it.
- With be basic structure complete, the floorboards can be added and nailed down to the joists (figure K).
- Some of the floor-board will need to be notched out to fit around the posts ( figure L). Take measurements and mark the board to lay out your cuts, and cut out the notches using a jig saw.
- Continue working until all of the deck boards are in position.
In the segment that follows, the authentic stadium seats are installed on the new deck.
