If you'd like to build a decorative shelf or mantel, you can choose from a wide range of materials such as red oak, poplar or #2 white pine (figure A). Although you can stain the oak and poplar, it's generally best to paint pine. To build your mantel, start by placing a backer board on the wall. Then attach dentil molding (figure B) to the bottom of the backer board. Set crown molding in front of the dentil molding, and set the shelf on top (figure C). You may want to use decorative molding to finish the edge of the shelf (figure D). For a different look (figure E), place decorative molding directly above the dentil molding. If you'd rather not deal with the compound miter cuts necessary for installing crown molding, dress up the backer board with prefabricated brackets (figure F ) or stamped wooden decorations (figure G). Another option for beginners is a precut, premitered mantel kit (figure H). Don't leave your mantel unfinished. Wood stain makes a big difference (figure I). If you're putting your mantel above a fireplace, consider installing decorative molding around the fireplace to create a "surround" and placing the mantel above it (figure J).
