  • Building an Entertainment Center
  • Even the television gets some new space!
    From "DIY to the Rescue"
    episode DTTR-708

    PHOTO

DIY to the Rescue builds an entertainment center to match the bookshelves.
The entertainment center is an integral part of the bonus room for the Suhocki’s. So, DIY to the Rescue helps Don and Anne Marie Suhocki create a new place for their electronics fitting the rest of the room. And, it is put together and installed exactly the same way as the shelving unit.

    Material:

    tape measure
    birch plywood (1-inch and ¼-inch)
    circular saw
    framing square
    wood glue
    staple gun
    nail gun
    electric drill
    2-inch dry wall screws

    Steps:

    1. To build the entertainment center, find the center of the 4x8 piece of birch plywood and mark it with a chalk line (Figures A & B).

    2. Use that chalk line to determine where to cut and when the line is made, use a table saw to cut along that line (Figures C & D).

    3. When using the circular saw, the lines are not always straight so when you’re done with your initial cut, line up the cut line on top of the opposite edge (store-cut edge) to make our edge straight (Figures E & F).

    4. Mark the length horizontally that you need to piece to be and in this case it is 23 ¼ inches (Figure G).

    5. To complete the entertainment system, put it together like the shelving units earlier (Figure H).

    6. First measure and mark where it needs to be cut, then just glue, nail, and trim like the shelves (Figure I).

    7. To sink the nails beneath the surface, use a nail punch to give the entertainment center a finished look (Figure J). If you don’t have a nail punch, use another nail and tap it on the head of the nail you want to sink (Figure K).
