Joan Steffend, host of HGTV's Decorating Cents, meets with Jim Hanson and Steve Douthit of American Island Antiques and Folk Art in Minneapolis to learn some new ideas for fixing up old furniture and accessories. Turn an old trunk into a functional table or a decorative piece of furniture. To turn a trunk into a cabinet (figure A), turn it on end and add wooden trim at the bottom and interior shelves for storage. Use spray adhesive to add a print or photograph to the cabinet door, and border the design with wood trim or a picture frame (figure B). Make a trendy daybed the economical way by joining the fancy headboards of a pair of twin beds (figure C), or transform a beat-up foot board (figure D) into a fabulous headboard (figure E) with a bit of paint. Change the look of old furniture by adding casual slipcovers (figure F). Lay the fabric face down on a chair, and cut out fabric pieces to fit the contours of the chair (figure G). Pin the sections together and stitch the seams. Turn the slipcover right side out, and slip it on the chair.
