    Figure B

Leave a lasting impression on dinner guests with beautiful etched-glass dinnerware. Whitney Ferre of the Creative Fitness Center demonstrates the technique.

    Materials:

    Glassware
    Etching cream
    Masking tape
    Denatured alcohol or window cleaner
    Black permanent marker
    Craft knife
    Stiff paintbrush
    Sponge or rag

    1. Make sure the glass is clean and dry. Mask off the entire rim of the dinner plate.

    2. Draw the desired design on the masking tape around the rim, using a permanent marker. Whitney used a leaf design (figure A).

    3. Use a craft knife to cut through the masking tape around the design. Peel away the masking tape, exposing the glass beneath the leaf shapes (figure B).

    4. Using a stiff brush, apply a generous amount of etching cream to the exposed glass. Let the cream set for 10 minutes.

    5. Rinse away the cream under running water, using a sponge or rag.
