Crafter Christine DeJulio explains how to add a decorative etched-glass design to cabinet doors, using masking tape to create a simple pattern.

    Materials:

    Rubber gloves
    Safety glasses
    Window cleaner
    Paper towels
    Coffee filters
    Masking tape
    Glass cabinet doors
    Craft stick
    Etching cream
    Paintbrush
    Sponge
    Water

    1. Remove the cabinet doors (some doors have removable glass panels).

    2. Clean the glass well with window cleaner and paper towels. Or use coffee filters to wipe window cleaner from the glass.

    3. Apply masking tape to the glass, creating a border around the perimeter of the cabinet door. Apply two more rows of masking tape inside the border (figure A). When the etching is completed, there will be two etched squares, one inside the other. Make sure the edges of the masking tape are stuck tightly to the glass by rubbing a craft stick over them. This will prevent etching cream from bleeding under the tape (figure B).

    4. Apply etching cream to the glass, following the manufacturer's directions. Apply a generous coating, using a paintbrush or an applicator packaged with the etching product. Leave the compound on the glass for about 5 minutes or the length of time recommended by the manufacturer. Work in a well-ventilated area, and wear rubber gloves and safety glasses (figure C).

    5. Rinse the etching compound from the glass by running it under water and wiping the compound away with a sponge (figure D).

    6. Put the doors back on the cabinet.
