The key to this great project is the fact that you can easily mix and match cushions.

    Materials:

Foam cushion form with polyester batting wrap
Two decorator fabrics that will not "shadow through" when wrong sides are placed together (Waverly Capulet stripe in Antique Gold 664299 and Bramasole floral in Cabernet 666511 from the Bella tuscany Collection were used in this project)
Sturdy kite string or 3/8"-wide elastic
    Sewing machine and thread
    Iron and pressing surface
    Large safety pin
    Scissors
    Marking pen (air- or water-erasable)
    Round plate for cutting guide
    Tape measure
    Optional: serger
    Straight pins

    1. For cut length of panel: Measure cushion length plus 2 x depth (height or box edge of pillow) plus 8".

    2. For cut width of panel: Measure cushion width plus 2 x depth (height or box edge of pillow) plus 8".

    3. From each fabric, center any design and cutting "on grain" cut a panel that measures cut length by cut width. Place panels right sides together and round the corners, using a plate as a guide. Mark curve (figure A), then cut with scissors.

    4. Pin the 2 layers together and stitch around the panels approximately 1/2" around the edge, leaving an 8" opening along the center back. Serge or use a 1/2" seam allowance, notching out curves as necessary. To notch, fold the fabric (figure B), then snip with scissors.

    5. Turn project right side out. Press, then top-stitch opening closed, leaving 1" open at center of former opening.

    6. Top-stitch 1" away from outer edge around entire panel, forming a casing.

    7. Tie elastic or kite string to safety pin and pull cord through casing so it enters and exits from the 1" opening.

    8. Place cushion centered on panel. Pull string or elastic up so it draws in over cushion (figure C). Tie off string or, if using elastic, stitch ends together. Hide any excess string or elastic between cover and cushion.

    9. Adjust fullness so sides are smooth and fullness is distributed near corners.

    10. To cover the batting, use a piece of fabric and stuff inside over the batting (figure D).

    11. When you wish to reverse cover, untie, flip it over to other side and retie. If using elastic, simply turn to other side as you might a shower cap.

Optional Materials for Making Cushion Form (if needed):

3" or 4" upholstery foam for cushion
    Polyester batting -- medium-loft
    Electric knife
    Dressbox tissue to cut pattern
    Needle and thread

    Optional Instructions (if needed):

    1. Trace shape of chair seat onto tissue. Cut out pattern and trace shape onto foam.

    2. Use an electric knife to cut foam to outline shape. Bevel cut all edges with knife, removing about 1/2" triangle from each cut edge. Wrap cushion with batting so seam joins at a lower edge of least obvious edge.

    3. Hand-stitch batting at seam so edges first meet, trimming away excess batting bulk where needed.
