Designer and craft demonstrator Vivian Peritts uses objects from around the house to stamp a multicolored painted wooden chair. Materials:
Wooden chair, new or old DecoArtB. Americana sealer DecoArt White primer DecoArt Americana acrylic paints Household items such as a potato masher, a plunger, wooden clothespins (the kind without springs) and cardboard cores from paper-towel rolls Paintbrushes Paper plates Sandpaper Tack cloth Paper towels - Sand a wooden chair, and wipe with a tack cloth to remove particles. Seal with DecoArt Americana sealer. Sand lightly. Prime with DecoArt White primer. Paint each rung or slat of the chair a different color, using DecoArt acrylic paints.
- Place some black acrylic paint on a paper plate. Dip one end of a wooden clothespin in the paint, blot off excess paint on a paper towel, and stamp onto one of the back rungs of the chair. Rock the clothespin back and forth to get a clean image (figure A). Try dipping the other end of the clothespin in a different color of paint, and stamp the same way.
- Try many different household items. To make carrots, Vivian used the end of a ruler and stamped three images in orange paint, then placed a dot at the top of each image using the end of a dowel and green paint (figure B).
- Vivian created pawprints by using the round end of a glue stick topped with three dots from a pencil eraser (figure C).
- Use a plunger to make large circles, a potato masher to make wavy lines. Use your imagination, and look around the house for other household items to use as stamps.
- To stamp on fabric, add DecoArt fabric medium to the paint. If you'd like to stamp ceramic surfaces, add DecoArt Ultra Glaze to paint.
