    Figure D

Artist Paula O'Keefe uses fresh flowers and waxed paper to create decorative place mats and do-it-yourself wrapping paper.

    Materials:

    Fresh flowers
    Fresh leaves
    Waxed paper
    Iron
    Cloth for pressing
    Scissors

    1. Remove the green base of the flowers and the stems, leaving only the petals. The flowers should be as flat as possible so the place mat won't be bumpy and the waxed paper will fuse well. If the petals come apart, that's Okay (figure A).

    2. Place flat flowers or flower petals all over the top of two layers of waxed paper in a desired pattern or design (figure B).

    3. Place another piece of waxed paper on top of the flowers and petals. Place a pressing cloth on top of the waxed paper.

    4. Set the iron on a moderately hot setting, and iron over the pressing cloth (figure C).

    5. Remove the pressing cloth. The waxed-paper pieces should be fused together, with the flowers and petals between them. Use scissors to cut the edges of the place mat, scalloping the edges (figure D).
Use the same method to make gift-wrapping paper too.
